The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs defeated the Southern Methodist University Mustangs 42-12 on Friday night at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. The opening kickoff was almost 2 hours late, due to lightning, and finally got underway at 8:57 p.m. TCU started off slow in the monsoon and fell behind 9-0. With the Frogs needing someone to make a big play, Turpin Time struck in the 2nd quarter. Senior speedster KaVontae Turpin caught a punt and took it 78 yards to the house for six. Cole Bunce added the extra point and the Frogs were in business.
The Frogs followed that up with a six-play, 70-yard drive that ended up with Jaelan Austin recovering a Sewo Olonilua fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and flipping the lead to purple, 14-9. SMU was able to add three points right before the half with a 49-yard field goal, closing the gap to 14-12. Then came another pivotal play by KaVontae Turpin. With 11:33 left in the 3rd quarter and the Frogs up just two, Shawn Robinson threw an interception into the arms of SMU defender Shaine Hailey. The Pony Linebacker, who runs the 40-yard dash in a blazing 4.5 seconds, had nothing but end zone in front of him. Turpin turned defensive back and wrestled Hailey to the ground. Then two plays later, Ben Banogu sacked the quarterback causing a fumble. Alec Dunham scooped and scored the Frogs to a 21-12 lead.
It was all Frogs from here on out. Gary Patterson’s defense completely dominated the Pony offense. Shawn Robinson added an 18-yard touchdown run to the cause. Then Turpin Time struck one last time. Turpin took a short Robinson pass, 42 yards to paydirt.
Michael Collins came in at quarterback in a relief role and scored the last points of the night, a 10-yard touchdown run, with 6:47 left in the game. It was definitely an entertaining night in Dallas. Next up is the Ohio State Buckeyes. Go Frogs! Join the conversation at Killerfrogs.com.
